Sin

When we choose to follow our own instructions instead of God’s instructions, it separates us from God; but God has made a way for us to escape and to come back to Him.

Sin

The following activities are tools you and your family can use to connect and grow with one another and with God.

1

What is Sin?

Ask:

What do you think a house or a big building would look like if the builders never followed any instructions (what we call “blueprints.”)?

Watch:
Do:
  • Bring out a LEGO set, or some other sort of building activity that has instructions along with it. If you don’t have anything like this handy, a recipe for cookies or some other item to bake will work as well.

  • Split into two groups, and have one group make or build the thing using the instructions, and one group make or build the thing by making up their own instructions, and putting it all together however the feel like putting it together.

  • Afterwards, huddle up and compare the two things. How are they different? How are they the same? Go around and talk about how it changed things when you followed the instructions, verses just doing something however you felt like doing it.

  • Take a few moments and talk about the instructions that God has given us in Matthew 22:36-40, and why it’s important for us to follow those instructions. Talk about why we fail to follow those instructions sometimes. Finally, pray together and ask God to help us forgive when others fail to show us love, and ask God to forgive us when we fail at His instructions.

2

Why Does it Matter?

Ask:

What does it feel like to be trapped somewhere? How does it feels when you’re finally able to escape from something that’s holding you?

Watch:
Do:
  • This one will take a little bit extra planning, so be sure to read through it before jumping into the video. Set up a time to go to an escape room as a family. You could even invite another family to go along with you, or invite some friends you’d like to work on showing God’s love to.

  • After the escape room, either find someplace to have a snack, or go get some ice cream, while you talk about how it felt to get out of the room (or to fail at the escape room if it didn’t work out). Go around and ask each other, how does it feel knowing that God has given us a way to escape from our sin? Why do you think God has sent Jesus to die for us? Finally, pray together and thank God for giving us a way to be free fro our sin, and ask Him to help us always remember to live by His instructions, and not by our own.
